Alice In Chains, combining the modern sounds of grunge and the heavy
sounds of metal, have risen from the Seattle scene to become one of the
best hard rock / alternative bands there is today. The dark, drugs-death
image that Layne Staley has given the band ironically has taken them to
even more fame and succes, of course helped by other factors such as Jerry
Cantrell's awesome guitar riffs.
The band formed with Staley in the late 80's with the name of Alice N'
Chains, later he met Cantrell and they changed the name to AIC. They
started looking for what they wanted to be their characteristic sound,
and they called Sean Kinney and Mike Starr (who quit some time later, and
was substituted by Mike Inez, former bassist for Ozzy Osbourne).
They signed with Columba and released a promotional EP titled "We Die Young",
which was pretty succesful. This was followed by the album
"Facelift", in which the band defined their style even more.
Then came the EPs "Sap" and "Jar Of Flies", in which they had a more acoustic
sound. After their two latest records, there have been rumors that
they might released a boxed set with several albums, or there is also the
possibility of a totally new record.
The members of AIC have done also other projects such as Mad Season, in which Layne Staley joined Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, Barrtet Martin of The Screaming Trees and John Baker Saunders, who released an excellent record titled "Above", which has resemblance to the music of AIC: There are rumors that McCready wants to go on with Mad Season, although Staley is out of the project. There's also a possibility that Jerry Cantrell might do a solo project.
